As November 2024 comes to an end my thoughts are directed to two local young men who attended schools in our communities and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I knew these young men and regret having to remember them this way. They were both typical boys for the area and weren’t very different from other students that attend our schools. The main difference was that they both joined the military at an early age and were killed in action. Spencer Karol and Kevin Joyce.
Spencer was one of the very first casualties of the Iraq war. Kevin was a Marine killed in Afghanistan. These young men attended schools in both Joseph City and Holbrook. It is a terrible thing that these young men, who had so much to offer and so much future ahead of them had their time cut short.
May we always remember our civic responsibilities to stay informed of the issues and to participate in the democratic process. The freedoms that we have in this country come at a cost to us all and probably more than we realize. It’s my sincere hope that we all contemplate the liberties that make our country great and honor all those who have sacrificed and contributed to keep us free and safe.
