“Love cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action and that action is service.”

–Mother Teresa

Many years ago, I lived inner city and loved it. For 10 years I was in walking distance of pretty much anything I wanted to eat, see or do, but the one thing I was never able to find there amongst so many people was a sense of community. I really thought about that this past week as I watched the people of Joseph City step up and serve one of their own.

Word had gotten out that one of our favorite Love’s employees, Luci Taha, was in need of some help. Her hot water heater decided to stop working and a friend posted as much on social media. In a matter of hours, a plan was hatched. Derron Hansen stepped up with a water heater but soon realized he had to have a place to house it in outside her home. Neighbor after neighbor stepped up and lent a hand, others brought in supplies, a sheet of tin for the roof, a 2×4, some plywood, and soon it was complete. This was no singular event in this small community, it’s a way of life. It’s what makes a place home and if you have to leave, a place you ache to come back to. We may not have everything at our fingertips in a small town but when it comes to community, we have all that matters.
