Like clockwork, the season shifts, stores fill up with pencils and notebooks, and parents start asking the eternal question: “Where did the summer go?” This week, our local schools swing their doors open once again and suddenly the crosswalks are busy and lunchboxes are packed.
There’s always a certain energy in the air when the first day rolls around. Kids are a little nervous, a little excited. Teachers are hoping their new batch of students will laugh at their jokes—or at least pay attention long enough to hear them. For parents, it’s equal parts relief and nostalgia, watching their children grow another year older.
In small towns like ours, schools are about so much more than learning to read and write. For a lot of families, schools provide reliable childcare, a place where kids are safe during the workday. For some students, the best meals they’ll eat all week are brought to them free of charge at the school cafeteria. And for just about everyone, school events, games, concerts, fairs are a reason to gather, to catch up and to feel like a part of something bigger.
It’s no exaggeration to say that a strong school makes for a strong community. When we support our schools, we’re not just investing in academics, we’re building up the heart of our town. The benefits ripple out for years, shaping not just this generation, but the next one, too.
So, as another school year kicks off, let’s remember how much our community relies on these schools—and how much they rely on us, too. If you have time to volunteer for a school event, it’s a couple hours of your day that might leave a permanent impact on the children of our community. Here’s to a great start and a year full of learning, laughter and time spent growing closer as a community.
