Two members of the Holbrook City Council have taken the first step toward running for positions in the state legislature in 2018. According to filings with the Secretary of State’s Office, both have established campaign committees.

Vice Mayor Wade Carlisle, a Democrat, indicated he intends to seek the post of District 6 state senator, a position currently held by Snowflake Republican Sylvia Allen.

Mayor Robert “Bobby” Tyler, also a Democrat, is exploring the possibility of a run for one of two District 6 seats in the Arizona House of Representatives, positions currently held by Republicans Brenda Barton of Payson and Bob Thorpe of Flagstaff.

The state’s resign to run law goes in to effect when a candidate files nomination papers. The filing deadline is May 30, 2018. Officials who are in the last year of their term are not required to resign.

“Democrats are organizing a major push to represent Holbrook and Snowflake/Taylor in the state legislature,” said Navajo County Democratic Party Chairman Eric Kramer in an Aug. 12 press release.

“The three excellent candidates (one for the state Senate and two for the state House) will be announced during a tour of Legislative District 6 on Saturday, Aug. 19.”

The tour includes a stop at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Masonic Hall in Holbrook, hosted by Navajo County Sheriff K.C. Clark.
