Snowflake Town Manager Paul Watson has been appointed by Governor Jan Brewer to the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism.

The commission envisions a state in which Arizonans view service and civic engagement as an essential part of their civic responsibility, and people and communities are connected and strengthened through service and volunteerism.

The commission aims to build an ethic of service and volunteerism by working in local and statewide partnerships with public and private sectors, governments, community and faith-based organizations to initiate, motivate, enhance and maintain service and volunteer opportunities that strengthen communities and improve the quality of life for all Arizonans.

Watson participated in his first commission meetings recently in Tucson and Flagstaff. In this volunteer position, he is tasked to support functions of local programs, support AmeriCorps, advocate for national service and volunteerism, and participate in national days of service.

He served as the town manager of Pinetop-Lakeside from 1991 to 2004. He received his associate’s degree from Mesa Community College and his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.

Watson’s volunteer involvement includes chairman of the White Mountain Partnership, member of the Snowflake/Taylor Chamber of Commerce, past President of the Arizona City/County Management Association and a past member of the International City Management Association. He has served on the Summit Healthcare Governing Board since 2002, and serves as the vice chairman of the board and the chairman of the Finance Committee.

His hobbies include golf and other outdoor activities. He has lived in the White Mountains for more than 22 years, and he and his wife raised four children in this area.

As part of the commission’s current statewide recruitment campaigning for AmeriCorps, listings for positions are available via the AmeriCorps*VISTA website at http://gocyf.az.gov/CYD/GRT_ASG_Positions.asp.
