Nav County

In an effort to inform the public regarding Proposition 421, the proposed Navajo County jail tax, there will be a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. today, July 24, across the street from Holbrook City Hall at the Machusek Recreation Center. Another town hall meeting will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow, July 25, at the Joseph City Fire Department, located at 4513 Main St. in Joseph City.

The proposed tax will be on the Aug. 27 ballot and if passed would add one-third of one cent to every dollar earned on retail sales within Navajo County. Those funds collected would support the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, which would in turn allow funds currently allocated to the department to be held in the general fund to offset the anticipated $2.5 million annual loss from the closure of the Cholla Power Plant in Joseph City and the Navajo Generating Station in Page. Even though NGS is located outside of Navajo County, the loss of funds would be felt through loss of jobs and the impact on the Kayenta coal mining operations.
