At the Feb. 13 meeting of the Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board, Snowflake High School Principal Larry Titus and GEAR UP Coordinator Greg Lunt gave a presentation on the response to their Intervention to Initiative Report, which features programs for tutoring, skill building, and rigorous courses such as honors and dual enrollment courses.
“What are we doing to help kids graduate? What are some extra things that kids need to get them that extra emphasis and (how) it ties in with what we call Response to Intervention that the schools have and how to keep kids in school,” said Greg Lunt.
Using these questions as guidelines, Snowflake Unified School District is working to make sure their students have as many opportunities to succeed as possible.
Over the last few years, the tutoring aspect of the program has serviced 243 students since August of 2016, for a total of 6,127 hours of tutoring over that period. Over that same time period, there was over 1,254 hours teaching credit recovery and 15 reteach sessions per semester at 64 hours per session. In addition, 256 students received one hour of tutoring every Friday, which is third of the student population.
Further discussed at the meeting was a change in the date of the April board meeting to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, due to a schedule conflict with Superintendent Hollis Merrell.
Snowflake Junior High continues work on making their field compliant with the American Disabilities Act (ADA). Woodruff Construction won the bid for the job at $76,000. It was also noted that SJHS is looking to fill a position as a paraprofessional.
