Bullying and school safety are hot topics nationwide. The Snowflake Unified School District has provided assemblies and education to students on bullying and school safety for many years and administrators at Snowflake High School (SHS) are taking it one step further. Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 5), local resident, Walter Blackman, will be providing training and education to small groups of SHS students on assault and sexual harassment prevention.
Blackman will define what sexual assault and sexual harassment are, the legal punishment for the behavior, the effects of sexual assault and harassment on the school, and how to prevent sexual assault and harassment. Blackman will also focus on a dignity and respect campaign similar to the one the U.S. Army utilizes to combat bullying, sexual assault and harassment and encourage diversity and inclusion.
Blackman is a dedicated and experienced senior leader, and combat veteran with two decades of operational and combat experience in the U.S. Army. He also went on to serve as a senior staff advisor to the Commanding General at the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth Kansas advising on issues such as the prevention of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and Equal Opportunity in the Army. Now in civilian life, Blackman offers consulting and education services on these subjects to schools and organizations.
Since the alleged sexual assault on the SHS campus in November of 2017, the school and the district are making every effort to educate students on sexual assault, sexual harassment and bullying behavior. If SHS students want to report a situation an email tip line is available for students and parents. Send an email to shshotline@snowflake.k12.az.us and report problems or share vital information, whether anonymously or not, to help solve issues that may arise at SHS.
