The City of Show Low has offered to work with the Town of Snowflake to provide surplus police vehicles to the Snowflake-Taylor Police Department (STPD) that would normally be offered at auction to the highest bidder.

This will give STPD the opportunity to add three of these vehicles to its fleet, Police Chief Jerry VanWinkle advised the Snowflake Town Council April 12.

The chief noted that the STPD provides backup control for city sponsored events in Show Low such as the 4th of July parade and the electric light parade in December. The STPD and the Show Low Police Department also work together on a joint DUI task force.

In return for STPD bearing the payroll and associated costs of employee expenses for events, the City of Show Low agreed to sign over the title to three police vehicles.

“We’ll replace high mileage vehicles,” said Chief VanWinkle. “These are in better shape than some of our vehicles and we would like to put them in our fleet.”

He explained that they will use the current equipment on vehicles that are replaced, and give the old vehicles to volunteers to replace the older high mileage vehicles they use.

The council unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Show Low to accept surplus police cars in exchange for providing services as stated in the agreement.

In other business, Chief VanWinkle requested approval of a resolution pertaining to the submission of projects for consideration in Arizona’s 2012 Highway Safety Plan. He explained that the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is seeking proposals from state and local agencies for projects relating to all aspects of highway safety. The Town of Snowflake will submit a grant application through the STPD to pay overtime for the DUI task force, enabling STPD to continue participating, and they will request in-car video system and radar for vehicles, and personal body cameras.

The council unanimously approved Resolution 11-533 as presented.
