The Snowflake Town Council approved a resolution last week pertaining to the submission of projects for consideration in Arizona’s 2016 Highway Safety Plan at the request of the Snowflake-Taylor Police Department.
Police Chief Jerry VanWinkle advised the council March 10 that the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety was seeking proposals from state and local agencies for projects relating to all aspects of highway safety.
The Town of Snowflake, through the STPD, requested approval to submit projects that will be considered for funding in the form of a reimbursable grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“We applied for three projects,” said the chief, noting that two of them are to pay overtime for special DUI enforcement and the third is for special traffic enforcement. Together, they total $8,000.
“The laptops we have had for many years are now obsolete,” said Chief VanWinkle, who explained that they cannot be upgraded, so they are applying for 10 laptops. He noted that if the laptops are not approved, they will have to look for another way to replace them.
The council unanimously approved the resolution.
In other action, the council:
* Approved a letter of engagement with Hinton/Burdick for the fiscal year 2015 audit.
Finance Director Brian Richards said the town has used this firm for the past three years.
The council recommended that staff members request proposals from other audit firms.
Richards noted that the proposed fee of $14,250 was lower than other towns in Navajo County are paying.
The council unanimously approved the letter.
* Approved Resolution 15-05, adopting policy and prescribing procedures for purchasing from the mayor and council.
Town Manager Paul Watson explained that this procedure requires approval annually.
The council also held a work session on What All Local Elected Officials Need to Know. Discussion centered on qualifications for running for office, the term of office, the oath of office, conflicts of interest, incompatibility of offices and municipal personal liability.
