Lou Jarvis shared, “It was right around 30 years that my dad ran the summer ball park.” At 60 batters per game and up to five games a night, Lou estimated that his dad announced more than 540,000 batters alone at the ballpark. “It wasn’t just the sheer volume of batters that was incredible,” continued Lou, “But how well he knew each one of them, whether from Snowflake, Show Low or Holbrook.”

Mitch Jarvis said he remembered all the mornings his dad would get up and drag the field, mow the grass and sweep the stands. “It wasn’t just the ball game that mattered to him, it was the people. We all wanted to be close to dad, he taught us that people are the most important thing.”

Kelly Jarvis concluded the presentation with, “That summer ball field was my home, whether working the concession stand or helping my dad announce. I would like to ask you, the council, to help us to honor the great legacy my dad provided for us kids and this town by naming the field after him.”

Vice Mayor Kerry Ballard shared, “I enjoyed Blaine throughout my whole life. I was one of the few that got to ride around with him in the golf cart. I hope you put the golf cart in the town parade in his memory.”

Mayor Lynn Johnson noted that there are several figures that stand out and have made an impact in a lot of people’s lives and one of those is Blaine Jarvis.

Town Attorney Robert Hall informed the council the name of the park could not be changed from Fredrickson Park as the Fredrickson family had given the land to the town for the park. Johnson responded by asking if it would be possible to name the ball field after Blaine Jarvis and Hall said he would research the matter to make sure it was appropriate to the land conveyance by the Frederickson’s.

The council voted unanimously to name the ball field in honor of Blaine Jarvis as long as it did not interfere with the conveyance.
