The Snowflake Town Council awarded a $103,436 contract last week to Cactus Asphalt, a Valley firm, for a town wide roadway pavement preservation crack and joint seal project.

The council authorized the call for bids for the project Jan. 27.

Bids were received from five firms, including Cactus Asphalt, $103,436; Hatch Industries, LLC, $128,000; Graham Contractors Inc., $204,872; Surface Contracting Inc., $209,490; and Sunland Asphalt, $211,998.

Public Works Superintendent Terry Cooper reported that all requirements from the bidders had been satisfied.

Staff members recommended Cactus Asphalt of the Valley, with Cooper noting that the town is required to accept the low bid.

In other business Feb. 24, the council awarded a $32,160 contract to D.W. Lusk Contracting, LLC, for improvements on Country Club Drive as a part of Reach 2, Southern Solution flood control project.

Finance Director Brian Richards noted that the town solicited bids by email, phone and notice in the newspaper, and two bids were received, though only one was deemed a qualified bid. He advised the council that 75 percent of the project is funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant.

The council adopted Resolution 15-03, renewing the town’s membership in the Rural Arizona Group Health Trust (RAGHT).

The town has been a member of RAGHT for the last three years, Richards explained, noting that this is a member owned insurance cooperative made up of local governments and charter schools. He said this has been a very good experience for the town, and allowed it to keep medical and dental insurance costs under control for the last few years.

The council approved deleting previous mayor Kelly Willis’ name from the town’s National Bank of Arizona account and adding the name of Mayor Tom Poscharsky. The signatures approved were those of Poscharsky, Dale Call, Don Camacho and Paul Watson.
