The Snowflake Town Council unanimously approved a resolution last week supporting legislation to equalize tax credit for donations to qualified charitable organizations, private schools and public schools.
The Apache & Navajo Counties Mayors & Council Members Association agreed in a meeting held Jan. 5 to put forth the resolution.
The goal is to equalize the charitable donation timeframe for public schools and private schools. Currently, the maximum donation for tax credits for public schools is $400, while the maximum for private schools is $2,000.
The resolution also addresses the deadline for collecting funds for a tax credit and asks that it be equal. Currently the deadline for public schools is Dec. 31, while the deadline for private schools is April 15.
The resolution notes that rarely are there private schools in rural communities, but they all have public schools and non-profit organizations.
Area officials are requesting greater fairness and equal treatment of the entities, feeling that is in the best interests of the state.
