The Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board approved seeking building renewal grant funding for Snowflake High School, Snowflake Junior High School, Taylor Intermediate School, Taylor Elementary School and Highland Primary School projects on April 27.

Business Manager Mark Ollerton noted that they submitted six different grant applications to take care of two issues, reroofing on the SJHS gymnasium and the SJHS vocation shop.

Grants were also sought for repairs to the fire alarm system at TES, repair of the kitchen fire suppression unit at TIS, SJHS and SHS, and repairs of the fire alarm system and suppression systems at HPS.

The School Facilities Board approved $20,000 to start structural engineering and design of a new roof at SJHS, which will probably be a $130,000 project, according to Ollerton.

In other business, the board approved renewal of the food service contract with Southwest Food Service. This is the second year of a five-year contract that requires board approval each year.

Superintendent Hollis Merrell reported that district representatives attended a job fair in Phoenix the previous weekend and found some interest in the seven to eight teaching positions the district will have open.

“This is a teachers’ market,” said Merrell. “They can pick and choose.” He noted that this is a huge problem, especially for rural schools, but they are working to get more applications.
