Holbrook’s girls soccer team has been delaying the season for a couple of weeks, but the past week, they more than made up for it, playing three matches in a four-day span.
Monday afternoon, they were in Chino Valley, where a solid first half led to a tired team in the second half and a 9-0 shutout by the Cougars.
Wednesday, the Lady Birds welcomed St. Johns to Roadrunner Stadium and again played well through the first half, trailing just 5-0. In the second half, the Redskins took advantage of Holbrook’s lack of depth, pulling away for an 8-0 Mercy rule win in the second half.
Thursday night, Holbrook hosted Camp Verde in what was a doubleheader night with the boys team following the girls. Camp Verde edged in front 3-0 at the half. The Lady Birds had a couple of good scoring opportunities in the second half but eventually dropped the match 8-0.
The team, now 0-3, will travel to face Payson on Tuesday, then will have four matches at the Chino Cup tournament this weekend.
Holbrook’s boys team played just once last week, hosting Payson in their half of the doubleheader soccer night at Roadrunner Stadium.
Like the girls’ team, the Roadrunner boys squad is currently short on numbers, with a limited bench. Holbrook played well through the first 40 minutes and trailed 3-1 at the half. Jashua Cook scored the goal on a nice left-footed boot in traffic. Payson pulled away in the second half to win the game 7-1.
Holbrook will host Snowflake on Wednesday at 6 p.m. They will then compete in the Show Low tournament this weekend. They are slated to face Blue Ridge at 11 a.m. and Snowflake at 1 p.m. Saturday’s two matches will be determined by Friday’s pool play results.
