Basketball season will get underway on Friday of this week at Holbrook High School, at least with varsity scrimmage contests. Both the boys and girls teams will host Coconino on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. The girls will start things with three quarters of action, followed by the boys with three quarters. The four teams will then repeat that process giving each team six full quarters of practice.
Both Holbrook teams are coming off second-round state tournament losses from a season ago. The boys’ team had an impressive record of 19-10 and went 8-3 in the east region. Their season came to a close at home in a second-round upset loss to Thatcher. The girls’ team struggled last year finishing just 10-20 on the season and finished with a 4-6 region record. However, they pulled things together down the stretch and upset Tuba City in the opening round of the playoffs before falling at Fountain Hills in round two.
The boys’ team coached by Delmar Johnson returns the majority of its varsity roster from last year led by region player of the year Tyler Tapaha. The girls, once again coached by Greg Perkins will have a mixture of returning players along with some younger newcomers. Rosters have not yet been set for either team.
Holbrook is slated to open the regular season on Nov. 22, when they host Window Rock. Tuba City makes a visit the following day, and Ganado comes to town on the 26th.
