Delmar Johnson once again heads the boys basketball program. Holbrook opens their season on Tuesday this week with a trip to Alchesay. Last season, Holbrook had a senior-heavy roster that advanced to the third round of the state tournament before having their season end in Prescott on a last-second shot by Yuma Catholic. Holbrook posted a 16-2 regular season mark behind the strength of nine seniors. This year’s roster currently has just three seniors. Holbrook will again play hard, up-tempo basketball, but will more than likely go through some growing pains early in the season. Following the Alchesay game they will play in the Ben Franklin Thanksgiving Classic. Holbrook has four games. On Friday, they will see Fountain Hills and Benjamin Franklin. Saturday’s contests will be with Seton Catholic Prep and Gilbert Christian. Holbrook’s first game at Munoz Gym will be on Nov. 28, when they host Chinle. This season, admission for all home games will be strictly on GOFAN. No cash tickets can be purchased at the door. The GOFAN tickets can be purchased a few days ahead of each home game. For any questions contact Holbrook High School. The Lady Roadrunners coached by Greg Perkins, will be hoping to bounce back from a poor season last year in which they had just their second losing season in the past 15 years posting a 6-12 regular season mark. Thanks to the strength of their overall schedule the team did advance to the state tournament keeping that 15-year streak alive, however, they were eliminated in the first round by Tuba City. Holbrook had a young core a year ago but now has returned four of their top five scorers from last season. This year’s team has just four seniors, but they have more experience than last year’s group. The team will need to get solid play from their bench to have a chance to keep their state tournament streak alive and advance deeper into the state playoffs. The varsity roster at this point in the season includes seniors Noheah Aberle, Raelle Yazzie, Lynea Smith and Nikol Gombos; juniors on the team are Alayna Yazzie, Deya Guerrero, Kylia Chee and Holly Casamero; sophomore Maya Francisco is joined by freshmen Sami Thomas and Bailey Williams. After opening their season at the three-time defending state champion Alchesay Falcons on Tuesday this week, the team will have a few more days to prepare to host Chinle on Nov. 28.
