The purchase of property to make the Northern Solution flood control project a reality was approved April 25 by the Snowflake Town Council.

For several years, the town has been working to mitigate flooding in the industrial park, in which 90 percent of the property lies in the flood plain.

Town Manager Brian Richards explained that they have been successful in getting two grants that address the flooding problem in the industrial park for the Southern Solution.

The Northern Solution flood control project requires a flood control channel of approximately 6.35 acres along the mid-section line in the industrial park.

Richards was requesting approval of the purchase of real property from Norman Flake, Mark Flake and Jay Flake.

“Copperstate Farms has agreed to donate that amount ($63,500) to the town for that purchase,” said Richards noting that Copperstate Farms officials feel that this will help them as well as the town.

Town Attorney Robert Hall said that as drafted, the agreement is bare bones and directed toward solving the flood problem. It does compel the city to ensure that the expenditure of funds will be for the property and the property will be used for flood control.

“It can’t be used for anything else under this agreement,” said Hall. “This gives all the parties a solution, an immediate solution, so that the flood plain issue can be resolved.”

It was also noted that they were facing a large lawsuit. This will bring the complex flood problem to a closure.

The council unanimously approved purchasing the property as presented.
