A report of a possible pipe bomb on the grounds of Snowflake Intermediate School quickly brought police, fire and medical personnel to the campus on Monday, July 28. At approximately 7:41 that morning, the Snowflake-Taylor Police Department received a call from the school reporting that a maintenance worker saw a device that appeared to be a pipe bomb located about 10 feet from the office door near the bicycle rack. School was not in session, so no students were present, but school personnel were evacuated. Police contacted nearby residents and set up a perimeter and safe zone. The Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were contacted and responded with personnel to assist with the disposal of the device. The DPS Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit located the device and removed it to a safe location, where an inspection of the device revealed that there was no explosive material in the device. The school was cleared to continue normal operations at about 4 o’clock that afternoon. “Our employee took the proper precautions, protecting the safety of staff, students and parents, although it turned out it was not explosive,” said Snowflake School District Superintendent Hollis Merrill. “We’re glad nothing came of it.”
