By Naomi Hatch Snowflake-Taylor Police Chief Larry Scarber was asked to report to the Snowflake Town Council on traffic control devices and whether he feels it is necessary to regulate traffic due to a concern expressed regarding emergency vehicle access to the Field of Dreams subdivision on 19th Street South. The concern relates to vehicles parking along the north side of George Washington Academy. He advised the council Jan. 12 that the roadway measurements were made, and potential stakeholders in the subdivision and at the school were contacted for input. As a result, Chief Scarber asked that no parking signs be posted on the north side of 19th Street South, and that the public works department paint the curb red. After driving fire trucks into the subdivision, a section on the south side of 19th Street South slightly longer than the length of the longest fire truck in use by the Taylor-Snowflake Fire Department was painted red from the subdivision entry west. It had been suggested that First Street East be made a one-way street for northbound traffic from 20th Street South to 19th Street South to enhance the safety of students being dropped off and picked up from the George Washington Academy. The chief did traffic counts during drop off and pick up times in different weather conditions, and did not feel that designating First Street East a one-way street is supported by traffic volume and patterns at this time. Nineteenth Street South, 20th Street South and First Street East approaching and adjacent to George Washington Academy will be posted as 20 mph school zones between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, which is consistent with posting for other area schools. A stop sign will be placed for northbound traffic on the corner of First Street East and 19th Street South. “We will keep an open mind to possibly changing to one-way as enrollment grows,” said Scarber.
