The Silver Creek Senior Center in Snowflake is holding a “Wheels for Meals Motorcycle Poker Run” and dinner dance fundraising event on Saturday, July 28, to raise money for the Snowflake Meals on Wheels program.
In Snowflake and Taylor, the Meals on Wheels is operated by the senior citizens center and is partially subsidized by both the Town of Snowflake and the Town of Taylor, with each town contributing $12,000 last year. But the food costs at the center for 2017 were approximately $80,000.
The center also receives contributions from the Northern Arizona Council of Governments but those contributions are capped at 262 meals per month, and United Healthcare programs cover a few clients but on an average month, the center delivers approximately 400 meals to area disabled or incapacitated homebound residents most of which are elderly.
To ensure those services continue, the senior citizens center is hosting the poker run and a dinner, dance, raffle and auction, which are also open to those who do not want to participate in the bike run. Funds raised will be used to offset the costs of those who are unable to pay for meals and to make serving equipment upgrades if possible.
Registration for the bike run is the day of the event only from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Taylor Rodeo Pavilion. The cost for bike run participants is $25 per bike or $35 with a passenger. The dinner and dance are also open to those who do not want to attend the bike run for a cost of $7.
Riders will collect a bead at each designated stop and trade that bead for a poker card at the end of the ride. All poker run participants must be back to the pavilion by 4 p.m. to choose their poker hand. Prizes for best hand, low hand and others will be awarded.
The event is a four to five hour motorcycle ride through the beautiful White Mountains beginning in Taylor with stops along the way to Alpine and then back to the Taylor Rodeo Pavilion. The bike run is followed by a dinner and hoedown from 4 to 8 p.m., all included in the cost of the event for poker run participants. A raffle and silent auction will also be part of the event.
