By Naomi Hatch The Snowflake-Taylor Police Department recently purchased two 2014 Ford Taurus police interceptor, all-wheel drive vehicles. The Snowflake Town Council approved Chief Jerry VanWinkle’s request to purchase the two vehicles from Show Low Ford Sept. 10. Council members were able to take a look at one of the new cars at the joint council meeting held Feb. 25. Creative Commercial did the graphics on the vehicles that are equipped with a mobile data terminal, lights and cages. “They have the most modern state-of-the-art safety features,” said Sgt. Dan Rush. “One thing we’re excited about is the all-wheel drive,” said Rush, noting that where high profile SUV’s got stuck, “this car got through.” He added that the Taurus has better fuel economy and performs better than the older V-8’s, so they are not costing citizens as much money. “We hope to continue to replace our aging fleet as the budget allows,” said Rush. Chief VanWinkle hopes to phase out the older vehicles, but the department has a limited budget. The chief also noted that he hopes to repaint and put the new graphics on older vehicles under the 2014-15 budget. “We thank the citizens for providing us with modern, up to date equipment to do our jobs better,” said Rush.
