Snowflake’s boys’ team has finally started their season, but not on a positive note. Snowflake pushed back their start of their boys’ basketball season with the expectation of late season play in the 4A football playoffs. Unfortunately, the team didn’t quite go as deep as they were hoping, but still basketball was put on the back burner until this week.
Tuesday night the Lobos opened their season at home vs Chinle. The game was close throughout, with Snowflake holding a 5-point lead after the first quarter, and a 3-point lead at the half. The Lobos extended that lead to 7 going into the final quarter. Chinle came from behind in the fourth handing the Lobos a 54-51 homecourt loss.
Gionn Jones led the team in scoring with 13 points. Jaron Woodside joined him in double figures with 10.
Friday night the team traveled to Coolidge for a meeting with the Bears. The long road trip coupled with early season play against a good team led to a 60-46 road loss.
Coolidge’s Preston Dees led all scorers with 23 points.
Snowflake now 0-2 will host Page on Tuesday night. This weekend they will participate in the Holiday Tournament hosted by Flagstaff High School. They are scheduled to face Estrella Foothills, and Needles, Calif., on Thursday. Bracket play will continue on Friday and Saturday. Next Tuesday they travel to Tuba City. The Lobos will host Holbrook in a boys-only contest on Dec. 18.
