Anyone exploring the Snowflake-Taylor area might have seen some adorable painted rocks hidden around town. That is thanks to Jen Western of Snowflake who started a Facebook group specifically for children of Snowflake and Taylor to have rocks to find, paint and hide again. Western and her family felt the call to move to Snowflake about four and a half years ago.

“We felt like it was the right thing to do and so we moved up here without a dime to our name and have had great blessings ever since. Our friends have asked us if we are going to move back to Mesa and we always say no. We love it up here too much.”

Western got the idea for painting rocks with her children and then hiding them in the town for someone else to find and to brighten their day when her son found a painted rock with a design and a Facebook page on it in another town and thought it would be a great thing for families to do together.

“I love painting silly little things for myself like rocks. I thought it would be fun to get going with my kids who love to paint stuff, too and love it when their stuff gets shown.”

The Facebook group is titled “Snowflake Taylor ROCKS!” and currently has over 250 members. It is a public, family-friendly page that anyone can join if posts stay clean and appropriate for children. “We sign ours and we have friends who don’t use Facebook much who will call from time to time and tell me they found one of our rocks. It’s so fun and it’s a cute little group,” laughed Western.

When she’s not painting rocks with her children, Western runs her new business, Willa Market, where one can find metal home décor and signs. Her work can be found at the Get Your Kicks Vintage Market in Holbrook on Saturday, Oct. 5, and in several different locations in the White Mountains.
