Holbrook’s struggles continued last week, although they did play two of the top seven teams in 3A in Show Low and Snowflake.

Facing the fourth-ranked Cougars on the road on Tuesday, Holbrook trailed by only 1 run after the first inning, but a 13-run second inning by the Cougars put the game well out of reach.

Holbrook did bounce back a little with 2 runs in the third, and their final run in the fourth frame before Show Low finished off the 19-3 win with 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Show Low has been one of the better 3A teams all year, and they finished with 7 extra base hits, including 2 home runs.

Tamryn Baldonado went 1 for 2, with a two-run home run. Jaycee Greer was 2 for 3, Elena Philpott was 1 for 2, Kentrall John was 1 for 3 and Emily Sanchez went 1 for 2.

Baldonado pitched 1.2 innings, giving up 14 runs on 11 hits with 3 walks and no strikeouts. Philpott allowed 5 runs on 5 hits with 1 strikeout.

Friday afternoon, Holbrook traveled to take on seventh-ranked Snowflake. The Lobos started quickly with 4 runs in each of the first two innings. They went ahead 10-0 with 2 more in the third. Holbrook scored once in the fourth, but that was the total of their offense in the 12-1 loss.

Despite Holbrook’s now eight-game losing streak, thanks to some early-season wins, they are still in position to reach the 3A play-in games. They were ranked 21st prior to Friday’s loss. Their final regular season game will have been on Monday against a struggling Alchesay team. If Holbrook can get an expected win, they would make the play-in games. Those games will be played at sites of higher-seeded teams on Wednesday. The eight teams winning the play-in round games on Wednesday will advance to the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Saturday, again at the high seed sites of those top eight teams who have received first-round byes.

Holbrook was 6-11 in regular-season games going into Monday’s contest with Alchesay.
