By Linda Kor After an intensive 24-hour search, deputies with the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office located an individual sought in connection with the shooting death of a man found southeast of Snowflake. On Feb. 29, a public alert was dispatched after officers discovered the body of an adult white male in a vehicle near a residence on Juniper Berry Trail. It was suspected that the owner of the home, Gabriel Barnes, 40, had fled the area on foot and was armed. According to Chief Deputy Jim Molesa, deputies were called to the residence after receiving reports from neighbors of gunfire. “We believe a gun battle took place between two or more people in the residence. The deceased was shot in the chest multiple times before making it out to his vehicle, where he died,” stated Molesa. Barnes was located by deputies at 2 p.m. on March 1 at a residence on Central Avenue in Snowflake, and was brought in for questioning without incident. Molesa stated that Barnes was booked into the Navajo County Jail for violation of probation. He will not be charged in the shooting until it is determined what transpired at the residence. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
