Last week Winslow High School celebrated 2026 parade, halftime coronation and community festivities. On the football field, the Bulldogs fell to the Page Sand Devils 31-0, but the evening featured several celebrations and activities for students, alumni and families.
During halftime, Samuel Roanhorse, son of Colandra and Jonathan Roanhorse, was crowned Homecoming King alongside Queen Haileigh Barton, daughter of Courtney and Bo Barton. The homecoming court included Jaycob Martinez, son of JP Martinez, Toby Martinez and Lisa Lucero, and Brooklyn Martinez, daughter of Nicole Ervien Hudgens and Eric Martinez.
Other court members included Aiden Saucedo, son of Bryan Saucedo and Augusta Gose, and Makayla Jimmie, daughter of Rhonda and Sean Jimmie; Jackson Butler, son of Melissa Butler, and Zoey Jones, daughter of Rachel Atwood and William Jones; and Alexander Reid, son of Dominique and Leander Reid, and Reese Martinez, daughter of Toby and JP Martinez. Tres Avelar, child of Jennifer Estudillo and Richie Avelar and Gianna Morgan, child of Crystal Johnson and Gregory Morgan, served as crown bearers.
Eric and Lani Leonard were honored as this year’s homecoming dedicatees in recognition of their decades of involvement with Winslow High School and the community. Eric graduated in 1997 and Lani in 1999. Lani currently teaches Early Childhood Development, serves as an ACT testing instructor and assists with several school clubs and activities. Eric previously served as the school’s athletic trainer and sports medicine teacher before joining BNSF. He currently helps coach junior high football.
The day’s homecoming parade featured a variety of entries, with the sophomore class winning the float competition for its Madagascar-themed entry. The Winslow High School Marching Band earned the overall parade entry award.
Because We Care, which organizes a safe, alcohol-free celebration for graduating seniors each year, held a dessert auction during the homecoming festivities to raise funds for its annual Grad Night party.
Another highlight came when Eric Greer won a raffle for the chance to kick a 15-yard field goal for $500. Greer successfully made the kick and collected the prize. His father, Rickey Greer, said his son practices kicking all the time.
The Bulldogs will travel to Ganado on Friday, Oct. 23, before returning home for their final regular-season game against the Window Rock Fighting Scouts on Friday, Oct. 30. The final game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will include Senior Night festivities honoring Winslow’s graduating players.
