Happy Holbrook Month is here! This is a great opportunity for everyone, not just Holbrook residents, to focus on showing joy and gratitude to friends and neighbors. I’m not sure when this Month of April celebration began but I feel confident when I say the city wouldn’t be celebrating it if it wasn’t for its mayor, Kathleen Smith. We’ve been friends for many years and this is by far her favorite celebration because it puts a focus on the city’s most valuable asset: the people that live there.

Some of the more recent examples by community members include efforts by Albert Reyes, who has beautifully renovated a building that at one time seemed only fit for demolition on Hopi Drive. Liz Nichols along with her helper Carolyn Castillo, are painting a new mural over another painted by Liz decades ago, this one showcasing the uniqueness of the community. Kenny Larson is spearheading an operation to bring a multitude of offerings to the community, among them are the soon to be installed Route 66 shield drive-thru sign at West End Park and the mini signs for the dog parks, the upcoming Gunslinger Car Show and Route 66 Festival, as well as a Route 66 Off Road Challenge grand prix at the end of the month. It’s exciting to see locals building up their community and I for one am appreciative of the example they set for us all.
