Anyone who knows me knows I really dislike winter—that stretch between January and March when the days are short, the cold is relentless, and everything feels bleak. Calling it the “winter blues” might sound harmless, but for many, it’s anything but. These feelings can range from mild irritation and restlessness to something much deeper and more overwhelming.
While we know that warmer days will eventually come and our bones will once again feel the warmth of the sun, it’s important to find ways to cope in the meantime. Prioritizing self-care is key — eating well, staying active and soaking up vitamin D can make a big difference. Whether it’s a visit to a local gym, bundling up and taking a walk through the Petrified Forest or Homolovi Park, or a bike ride along a back road, these small steps can do wonders for your mood and overall wellbeing. A game night with friends, picking up a new hobby (or dusting off an old one), a relaxing spa day, or making plans for the spring and summer can also provide a much-needed lift.
For those of us who mostly feel irritable, one of the best ways to channel that energy into something positive is by supporting others. There’s plenty of groups and organizations in our towns that would love a helping hand. But even just kind words will not only brighten someone else’s day but also uplift our own spirits. Remember, we’re all navigating challenges in our own way. If there’s one thing that we can focus on improving each day, it’s how we care for and uplift ourselves and those we meet along the way to warmer days.
