Every year around this time, cold weather arrives in full force. Suddenly, we’re all experts in weather commentary. “Cold enough for you?” becomes the official greeting of December, and the collective answer is a shivering, teeth-chattering “Yes!”
The first real cold snap always seems to catch us off guard. We dig out coats we haven’t seen since last March, discovering pockets filled with last year’s receipts and a single, mysterious cough drop.
Winter also transforms us into dedicated meteorologists. We check the forecast with the intensity of stockbrokers watching the market, then proceed to ignore it entirely. It says 20 degrees and windy? We step outside anyway, gasp dramatically, and question every life choice that brought us to a place where the air hurts.
But despite the icy mornings this time of year has its charms. There’s a special kind of beauty in a crisp morning (even a foggy one, like the one last week). There’s magic in gathering around warm soups, extra blankets and conversations that seem to last longer when it’s too cold to rush anywhere. So yes, winter is cold, inconvenient and occasionally rude. But it’s also a season that brings us together and reminds us that pumpkin lattes and hot chocolate are legitimate coping mechanisms.
Bundle up, be kind, and remember: if someone tells you “it’s not that cold,” they’re either lying or wearing better socks.
