The Wildcats and Head Coach Martin Roes balanced their early season at 1-1 with a 20-point win at Valley Lutheran on Thursday evening.

A rough beginning to the game was offset by a strong offensive showing later on, resulting in the 46-26 outcome. The Cats started the game still searching for their rhythm in the early part of the season. They lost 2 fumbles and failed on an onside kick attempt, all early in the game. Collectively, those errors cost them their early lead.

Once they calmed down, the team quickly regrouped and had a strong offensive showing the rest of the way. Quarterback Kase Fish orchestrated a series of drives, connecting with his receivers for big gains and he also scrambled for first downs. Running back Tyler Penrod showcased his abilities as well, racking up plenty of yards after contact on the ground.

Joseph City’s defense also stepped up with key stops, forcing several turnovers that helped swing the momentum of the game. Linebackers Kyan Larsen and Benson Moss paved the way for the defensive unit.

Coach Roes was pleased with his team’s performance. “We are a young team still figuring out how good we can be this year. This was a total team win. Everyone contributed; even our JV team was able to take the ball in the fourth quarter and score. This win is a testament to the Wildcats’ depth and collaborative spirit. It also sets a positive tone for our tough schedule ahead.”

Joseph City will take on the defending 1A state champion Hayden Lobos on the road on Friday night. Last season, the Lobos defeated the Wildcats 59-6. This season, they are off to a 2-0 start, having outscored their first two opponents 107-6. One of those teams was Salome, which defeated Joseph City soundly in week one. Based on that alone, Joseph City will be up against a tall task this week.
