It didn’t take the Lobos long to transition from the gridiron to the hardwood as they opened their basketball season with a win, just days after ending their football season. Some of Snowflake’s basketball players were playing football on Friday, Nov. 29, then following their loss to AZ College Prep in the 4A state semifinals, four days later on Dec. 3, they were in Chinle facing the Wildcats on a basketball court.
Snowflake defeated Chinle 65-50 getting considerable contributions from some guys in pads just four days earlier. Asher Brewer led the team in scoring with 16 points. Brock Ervien added 15, Merrick Ulberg netted 13, and Aaden Coor also reached double figures with 12. Landon Clare helped with 7, and Gionn Jones finished with 2.
Their second game of the season didn’t go quite as well. Hosting Coolidge on Friday night, the Lobos came up 3 points short in a 59-56 loss. The Bears are typically one of the better Southern 3A teams and they gave Snowflake a glimpse of the work they will need to put in to compete with a team that traditionally goes deep in the state playoffs.
This week, Snowflake travels to Page on Tuesday and will play three days at the end of the week in the Holiday Basketball Tournament hosted by Flagstaff High School. Next week, they play their final two games of 2024, hosting Tuba City on Dec. 17, then will open 3A east region play on the 19th when Winslow visits Lobo Gym.
