“The disco ball is like a beacon of hope that shines bright in the darkness.” – ABBA

Disco is back! Well, at least for one evening. The City of Winslow’s Recreation Department is hosting a Disco Dance Party on the 21st and hearing of it brought back some fond memories. I was pretty young when disco took the world by a storm, but I was into it and so was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Stanfield. He loved disco music so much he played it every day during recess and taught all of us how to do the Hustle. I remember all of us kids on the four-square courts singing along to KC and the Sunshine Band: “I wanna put on my, my, my, my, my boogie shoes, just to boogie with you, yeah.” My first concert was the Bee Gees in Los Angeles, Saturday Night Fever was in the theaters (the PG re-release) and like most girls I thought Tony Manero was a dream.

I was talking to my sister about my disco days fun and she reminded me that her first concert was Jimmy Hendrix in the summer of 1970. My sister is much cooler than I am. But regardless, disco was tons of fun and I bet if you go on the 21st you’ll think so to. I hope everyone dresses the part and that at least one person shows up doing roller disco. So put your boogie on ’cause boogie nights are always the best in town.
