I remember many (many) years ago as a teen I would visit family in Holbrook and on the weekends a group of us would all head out to State Route 77 for the races. Local boys would line up next to each other and with a wave of the flag, go tearing towards the Petrified Forest while the rest of us jumped up and down cheering. Then we would wait and before long one, then the other driver would cross the imaginary finish line. It was an exciting time, even though we didn’t see almost any of the actual race. Those days are long gone, but some semblance of that may be returning when Rutz MX opens up their motocross track in Holbrook. We need some excitement around here and I think (legal) racing may be the ticket. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been to a motocross race but I have been to the demo derby at the fairgrounds, athletics at the high schools and a few rodeos, so I know the rush of adrenaline that comes from watching someone you’re rooting for do their best and win. It’s good clean fun in the dirt. I hope once the races begin, we will all go and check it out, maybe even participate if you’re brave enough. But if nothing else, definitely appreciate an added amenity and the added money coming to the City of Holbrook.
