The White Mountain Symphony Orchestra will present its Pops Concert, Music from Outer and Inner Space, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, in the Show Low School District Auditorium, 500 W. Old Linden Road in Show Low. The concert marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

This year’s Pop’s Concert will be exciting for audience members of all ages.

The featured soloist is percussionist Trevor Barroero, a winner in the White Mountain Symphony Orchestra concerto competitions. A native of Tucson, he has performed as a soloist with nearly every major orchestra in Southern Arizona. Last December, as first-place winner of the PRISMA concerto competition in Canada, Barroero traveled to Russia to perform as guest timpanist with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. He participated in the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Institute and, for two consecutive years, in the Aspen Music Festival and School. A founding member of Lineage Percussion, a percussion trio, Barroero made history in May 2016 when his ensemble won the bronze medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, becoming the first percussionists in the 43-year history of the competition to be selected as senior-division finalists. A Flinn Scholar, Barroero recently completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Arizona.

Barroero will perform Emmanuel Sejourne’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings, a demanding work for any percussionist. Commissioned by the 2006 International Marimba Competition in Linz, this energetic piece features virtuosic playing that spans the entire range of the instrument. Intense, fast-moving lines are interrupted by long lyrical passages that will captivate the audience. Although a French composer, Sejourne transports the audience to the depths of Spain, as the soloist assumes the role of toreador in this passionate and exciting composition.

The orchestra will also perform Orchestra Suite from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek- The Original Series, The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), Claire de Lune, Overture to Candide, Mirror, Mirror and Scenes of Summer.

  1. Edward Vives, Ph.D., maestro of the symphony, commented, “When selecting repertoire for a performance, I sometimes start with a theme and then pick music to fit. This concert, however, started out with just some works that I hope the audience would enjoy hearing and that the musicians would enjoy performing. The ideas of ‘inner space’ and ‘outer space’ grew out of the selections themselves. The ‘outer space’ works are more easily explained–music from Star Trek and Close Encounters of the Third Kind as well as Debussy’s Claire de Lune (translated as ‘light of the moon’) are obvious. However, all music (and particularly music written for films and television) affects the listener on an emotional or subconscious level. ‘Inner space’ refers to that more introspective quality defined as ‘the part of the mind not normally accessible to consciousness.’ So, for the concert-goer, the question is, ‘What do you really hear when you listen, and how does it affect you?’”

At the intermission of the concert there will be a raffle that includes two queen-sized-plus quilts, an afghan and a kitchen faucet. One quilt is vintage, a geometric hand-pieced and hand-quilted work of art. The second quilt is Depression era, hand-appliquéd and hand-quilted. Both antique quilts were generously donated by an orchestra advocate who wishes to remain anonymous. The afghan is hand crocheted and beautifully done. We thank Murilou Chilman very much for her donation of the afghan. And we offer many thanks as well to Hughes Supply for its generous donation of the kitchen faucet. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The White Mountain Symphony Orchestra musicians are all volunteers, but concert expenses such as hall rental, music royalties and normal business costs need to be covered. There will also be a bake sale.

Adult tickets are just $10 per person, tickets for youth aged 5 to 18 are only $5 and audience members younger than 5 years old are admitted at no charge. Buy your tickets in advance at WMSO.webs.com, at the Chamber of Commerce offices in Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and Snowflake-Taylor, or at Classic Cookware, 100 N. White Mountain Road, Suite 102, in Show Low. You can also purchase tickets at the door the day of the concert.

The White Mountain Symphony Orchestra receives support from Northland Pioneer College, and from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts, through the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
