By K. Conner Winslow’s girl wrestlers made a big impact with a small squad, taking second in the state championship held earlier this month. It is just the second season for girl’s high school wrestling in this state and unlike other high school sports there are no separate divisions; every school competes against one another 6A thru 1A. A full squad of wrestlers consists of 14 members and with Winslow having less than half a squad with only six members it would seem a daunting task but the Lady Bulldogs, along with Coach Scott Larsen’s leadership, rose to the occasion throughout the season winning eight of the nine dual meets. This team went to state facing full squad teams and every one of the Lady Bulldogs would place, earning points for the team along the way. Winslow had two first place champions, Leia Kalk in the 182-pound class winning by a fall and Cherry Benecke in the 220-pound class also by a fall. Senior Alyssa Cordova, the only senior on the squad would take sixth place in the 106-pound class, suffering only her second loss of the season. Rile Davila would come in sixth in the 120-pound class, losing a less than four-point decision. Elyna Lopez would take fourth in the 152-pound class also due to a decision of less than four points. Nova Ragnoli took third pinning her opponent in the 170-pound class. Basha’s (6A full squad) won the state title with 191 points and Winslow (3A six-member squad) shared the runner-up spot with Liberty (6A full squad) each with 108 team points.
