This week is the final week for those interested in a seat on the city council or the mayor’s position in Holbrook or Winslow to submit their election packets. It’s truly admirable when citizens are willing to step up and serve their community on such a level. While it’s expected that those who aspire to those positions are doing so to improve their communities, what most people may not anticipate is the scrutiny that comes with being elected. Suddenly, discussions at the grocery store and at the post office between friends are more likely to be shared with a much larger group. Casual comments made at a city council meeting are questioned for a broader meaning, and although a person’s reason for running for office may seem crystal clear when elected, that clarity tends to dim when those goals are subjected to ordinances, resolutions and laws, and of course public opinion. It’s not easy. But in order for communities to develop and thrive we need people who are willing to step up and do those difficult things; to learn, understand and implement the best possible policies for the betterment of the people who live there. It’s a big responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. So, thank you for those who are throwing their hat in the ring. Not everyone can win, but this is one of those times when the effort really does count and should be applauded.
