I was able to listen in on the Holbrook Council meeting last week and the comments in Call to the Public and by the council really got me excited for what Holbrook is planning for its future. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard citizens step up in support of positive ideas and not only that, are willing to volunteer their personal time to make it happen. What I’m referencing specifically is the proposed community pond. The concept has some wonderful potentials that would benefit every citizen and visitor to the community by way of enjoyment, healthy atmosphere (both mental and physical), and a space to have human interaction.

Of course, there’s a few naysayers. There are those who think it’s not a fit site for such an endeavor, that there will be liabilities, that it can’t be maintained or protected from vandals, etc., and to some degree those people are important to have because that allows the city to vet out concerns in advance. The problem is the people that verbalize these complaints rarely step up and offer ways to overcome obstacles, preferring to limit themselves to social media posts.

Will there be setbacks? Most likely. But Holbrook is not inventing the community pond concept and it is not unique in its situation. Communities throughout the country, even the world have accomplished this feat so I have faith in Holbrook. The engineering firm, Stantec, is an international organization so I feel confident they have the skill set to help mitigate any concerns. Keep moving forward Holbrook, good things will come of it.
