By Greg Perkins The Joseph City Wildcats dropped two of three games played last week, although one of the two losses was a nailbiter that came down to the wire. Facing rival Mogollon last Tuesday the Wildcats played well in the first half and trailed by just five points at the break. That deficit grew to seven heading to the fourth, but in the final period Joseph City outscored the Mustangs 24-19, not quite enough to get over the top in the 64-62 loss. Daniel Hutchens led the Cats in scoring with 15 points. Koby Smith added 13; Hayden Hendricks, 11; Cody Davis, 10; Wyatt Johnson, 8; and T.J. Hendricks, 4. Friday’s home game with Hayden went the way of the Wildcats. Joseph City picked up its third win of the season in impressive fashion, rolling to a 75-38 home court victory. Johnson led the way with 15 points. Smith added 14; Hutchens, 12; T.J. Hendricks, 8; Davis, Bryson Palmer and Hayden Hendricks, 6 each; Kadin Crosby, 3; and Landon Baldwin, 2. Last week’s final contest was with El Capitan. Joseph City played host to a good Eagles team and came out on the wrong end of a 72-43 final outcome. The Cats gave up 17 points to the Eagles in both the first and second periods while netting just 14 of their own in the half. The Wildcat’s 20-point halftime deficit quickly grew larger when El Capitan poured in 33 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Hutchens, Smith, and Hayden Hendricks each finished with 10 points. Jaden Turley added 3, while Davis, Crosby, Johnson, Michael Diaz and Troy Poudrier netted 2 each. Joseph City headed into this week’s action with a 3-13 record. The Wildcats will host Superior tonight (Jan. 24), then welcome in Ft. Thomas on Saturday. Next Wednesday they get a chance at revenge when Mogollon comes to Joseph City.
