The Winslow High School Bulldogs 1964 championship football team was honored on the 50th anniversary of winning the state championship at the 2014 championship game at North Canyon High School in Phoenix.

According to Art Griffith, who was a member of that team, there were more of the 1964 Bulldogs there than the 1989 champion Blue Ridge Yellowjackets, who were also honored on the 25th anniversary of their winning the state title. Some 20 to 22 former Bulldogs were there and probably 80 of their family members.

The Winslowites met at the nearby Catch 22 Grill both before and after the game. Unfortunately, Coach Emil Nasser was in the hospital in Flagstaff with health problems and could not attend. He was represented by his son, Danny Nasser, who met with the team and honored with them. Emil Nasser talked on the phone to most of the players who were at the game. He will be 93 years old in the next week or so.

Many of the players came long distances for the honor. Among the many who were there were Mike Madeo, Mike Peart, Mike Sullivan, Bill Bollin and John Hysong. There were posters made of pictures and newspaper articles about the championship game and the 1964 season. Those were shown to team members, family members and fans at the Catch-22 Grill.

Griffith complimented Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) officials for the way they handled the ceremony. He said he was very pleased with the situation and proud to receive the honor. It is probable that this will be the last time this team is honored for its accomplishments, although some of the players looked like they could attend a 75th anniversary celebration. That would be quite an accomplishment.
