An Indian Wells man is in custody following a break-in at the Dairy Queen in Holbrook that took place in the early hours of Friday, April 28.
According to Sgt. Jed Koon of the Holbrook Police Department, at 6:37 a.m. on Friday, officers responded to a report of a broken window at the restaurant located at 1004 Navajo Blvd. As they investigated the scene, officers discovered that items within the building had been knocked over and that a wall in an outside shed had a hole kicked in it from the inside.
After observing surveillance video, officers determined that the intruder, who appeared to be under the influence, broke the window, climbed into the building and rummaged through the restaurant, then exited the back door and entered the shed. The door shut behind the man and then more than two hours later he could be seen kicking a hole in the wall next to the door and crawling out.
Later that morning an officer was driving on Navajo Blvd. when he spotted a man matching the description of the suspect standing on the side of the road.
The suspect has been identified as Joshua Begay, 18, who was arrested and charged with burglary, criminal damage, possession of drug paraphernalia and promoting prison contraband.
According to Sgt. Koon, “The surveillance video made all the difference in locating this suspect. The only other evidence at the scene was a footprint. The video allowed us to solve this case quickly.”
