A community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Kiarra Alma Gordon of Wide Ruins, a student at the Holbrook Indian School who was killed in a collision on I-40 on Sunday.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred at approximately 9:27 a.m., on Sunday, Aug. 28, when eastbound traffic was slowing due to a previous collision that involved a single commercial vehicle rollover. A Holbrook Indian School bus transporting 19 children and staff to a field trip to Window Rock was slowing in traffic when it was rear ended by a commercial semi-truck. Due to the impact, the school bus was pushed into the van. The collision claimed the life of Kiarra and four others reportedly sustained serious injuries.

In response to the tragedy, the Navajo County Board of Supervisors in partnership with the City of Holbrook expressed their profound condolences and concern. Assistant County Manager Bryan Layton stated, “We join our friends and neighbors as we work together to support those in need at this crucial time.”
