At approximately 9:39 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 18, the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near milepost 260 in the Winslow area. During the stop, K9 Jax was deployed to perform a free-air sniff of the vehicle, during which he gave a positive alert.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of more than 70 pounds of THC concentrate, over 178 grams of marijuana wax and nearly two pounds of marijuana. Deputies also located a firearm inside the vehicle. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is over $1.6 million.

While Arizona law permits adults to possess limited amounts of marijuana for personal use, the quantity found in this case far exceeds legal possession limits and clearly indicates trafficking-level activity, which remains a serious felony offense.

The occupants of the vehicle who are all residents of New Mexico were arrested on the following charges: Roberto Reyes, 39, transportation of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug for sale and possession of a narcotic drug; Juan Diaz-Torres, 27, transportation of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug for sale and possession of a narcotic drug; and Luis Alfonso Martinez Reyes Jr., 40, transportation of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of a narcotic drug, failure to disclose a firearm and possession of firearm during drug offense. Each of the suspects were booked into the Navajo County Jail.

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to combating drug trafficking and keeping dangerous narcotics off our streets. K9 Jax and the Criminal Interdiction Unit continue to play a vital role in these efforts.
