By Greg Perkins It’s Homecoming Week in Holbrook, where the Roadrunners will get a close up and personal view of the top ranked team in Division IV when the Yellowjackets come to Roadrunner Stadium. Blue Ridge is the defending state champion and appears to be on a fast track to a repeat of last year’s unbeaten season. Holbrook is coming off two straight victories, already doubling last season’s win output. Those wins came against Alchesay and Window Rock, two teams not nearly the same caliber as Blue Ridge, but they were wins nonetheless. After what has been a festive week at the school, the Roadrunners, who enter this game at 2-2 and have shown improvements in several areas from a year ago, will get a good test of what it takes to compete at the highest levels of Division IV. The Jackets have been scored on in four of their five wins this year, with the only shutout being a 50-0 pasting of Snowflake. Last week they gave up 14 to Round Valley, one of Holbrook’s future opponents, so this game could be used as a bit of a measuring stick to see how the Roadrunners may stack up against the Elks. Hopefully, the Birds can stay healthy this week, because next week they will get to face the No. 2 team in the state as they enter a tough three-week stretch in their schedule. Speaking of Snowflake, after cruising through the first two weeks of the season beating up on Holbrook and Alchesay, the Lobos ran into their own bully, getting crushed by Blue Ridge, then falling in a close game at Show Low last week. Having faced the two top ranked teams already, they should be more than ready for a win when they travel to St. Johns. The Redskins have a storied program, but a lot of that was built against teams from the old 2A North. The Skins have a great coach, but Snowflake has better athletes and needs this win more. Winslow bounced back from its Flagstaff loss in week three with an easy shutout over Ganado last week. This week the Bulldogs’ schedule remains easy when they host Chinle. The Wildcats are just 1-3 on the sea-son, with that win also coming against Ganado. The Dawgs will easily move to 4-1 on the season with an-other big win. Last weekend, Joseph City suffered its first loss since 2010. This week the Wildcats will begin another streak with an easy home field win over Fredonia. The Lynx were beaten by the Cats 72-0 last season. This year the Wildcats are likely to take out their frustrations on Fredonia after outgaining Mogollon last week, but not being able to overcome numerous turnovers to get a win. Despite the 58-26 loss to Mogollon, don’t be surprised if the two teams meet up again in the playoffs with a much closer outcome.
