When I took over The Tribune last year, one of the community events I knew I wanted to focus on was the Mother Road Farmers Market. From my very first visit, I fell in love with this market and everything it represents. I remember walking down the sidewalk at Eagle Pavilion surrounded with fresh produce, homemade baked goods, handcrafted soaps, jewelry, and art, and feeling incredibly grateful that we have something like this right here in Winslow.
Each Saturday morning at the market it feels like a celebration. Local entrepreneurs proudly set up their tables, offering goods they’ve worked hard to produce, eager to talk to each visitor about their story. I’ve enjoyed watching families shop for fresh vegetables, friends catching up over coffee and pastries, and children experiencing firsthand where their food comes from.
But it’s not just the atmosphere and friendly faces that make the Mother Road Farmers Market special. I deeply admire how it directly helps small businesses and individual vendors gain a foothold in our community’s economy. These businesses often start small at the market, steadily growing as word spreads.
Beyond commerce, the market helps fight the persistent challenges of being in a food desert. It ensures that residents have weekly access to affordable, locally grown produce, making nutritious food accessible in a way that truly changes lives.
As the market opens again for the season this Saturday, I feel that same excitement and pride I did the first time I walked through it. I’m thrilled to once again highlight the amazing work this market does and the positive impacts it creates for Winslow. I encourage everyone to experience it for themselves, come shop, support local entrepreneurs and enjoy this vibrant community space.
