The Navajo County Board of Supervisors accepted Supervisor David Tenney’s resignation and his recommendation for a replacement Tuesday, appointing Steve Williams to fill the vacancy.
The board also elected Supervisor Dawnafae Whitesinger as chairman. She is the first female to hold the position. Supervisor Jonathan Nez was elected vice chairman.
Williams was immediately sworn in by Superior Court Judge Michaela Ruechel following his appointment and took his seat on the board.
“I’m grateful that you’ve put your trust in me,” Williams said.
A criminal defense attorney from Show Low, Williams will serve District IV, which encompasses Show Low, Linden, Pinedale, Clay Springs and Heber. He has lived in the area about 10 years, having relocated with his wife from Maricopa County in search of a smaller community to raise their four children along. Williams noted that he enjoys the sense of community in the White Mountains, and told the board that he is continuously impressed with the way neighbors and friends come together to help each other in Navajo County.
Board members also honored Tenney for his service. Tenney is departing the board to fill a position offered by Governor Doug Ducey as director of the Residential Utility Consumer Office (RUCO). He has served as a supervisor since 2004. Along with staff members, the board thanked Tenney for his service and, due to his passion for football, presented him with a football signed by Navajo County team members.
In other action Nov. 10, the board:
* Approved a revision to the fiscal policy manual to bring it in line with procurement thresholds set by the state. Purchases under $5,000 are considered small dollar procurements, and only require “competition as practical” or “three oral quotes as practical.” Purchases between $5,000 and $100,000 are also considered small dollar procurements, but at least three written quotes are required. For purchases of more than $100,000, the county must use a formal bid process.
* Approved the sale of a used county vehicle to Youth Empowerment Services Diné Bikeyah for $1. The vehicle is a 2006 Chevrolet Suburban, which Deputy Finance Director Mary Springer noted was “at the end of its useful life” for the county, and could be put to good use by the non-profit organization.
* Recommended approval for a liquor license application for Black Horse Brewery in Show Low.
* Approved the acceptance of a bid of $17,407.23 for 63 back tax properties.
The next regular board meeting is set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the county complex in Holbrook.
