By Toni Gibbons New anatomy visualization technology that creates a 3D composite of the human body with a dissection table is coming to Northland Pioneer College’s campuses in Winslow and Show Low by the fall semester of 2019 according to Interim Vice President for Learning and Student Services Rickey Jackson. Navajo County Community College District Governing Board members were given a brief overview of the technological update that will become part of NPC’s Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology class as the result of a recent supplemental grant award of $150,670 to the TALON project at the Oct. 16 meeting. Jackson said, “This is something that Dr. Eleanore Hempsey and several biology faculty members have sought in their on-going endeavor to reach out to students and provide lab sciences from a distance.” The grant is part of a supplemental funding that was made available for all Title Three recipients to apply for. On Sept. 24, NPC staff was notified that they had been awarded the money. “The pilot part of the program is to see if we can use this technology over the network and to see if it can be interactive remotely,” continued Jackson. Over the next two years NPC faculty and staff will begin working toward offering the laboratory science classes at a distance to students in remote areas. The first step will be to purchase two virtual anatomy tables along with the software by the end of fall 2018. The next step will be the training of the Information Systems (IS) staff and faculty in the hardware and software use. Faculty will then begin to update curriculum over the summer of 2019. Faculty and IS staff will work together to pilot the new technology in science classes by the fall of 2019. Modifications will take place in the December of 2019 with the goal to offer the first laboratory science classes utilizing virtual anatomy tables and software in spring of 2020. Chief Business Officer Maderia Ellison noted that the board did not need to approve the supplemental grant award as it was an addition to the TALON grant, which had already been approved and accepted.
