There are only a few days left for taxpayers to take advantage of a program that allows direct donations to schools in exchange for a state tax credit.
Individuals who file as single can donate up to $200 and couples who file jointly can give up to $400 to the local school club of their choice. In the Holbrook district, there are clubs at each school authorized to receive funds, including athletic, academic and performing arts clubs. Each school also has an “undesignated” fund that will be distributed to deserving clubs.
The money is given directly to the school, and in turn to the designated club, instead of being filtered through the state. In this way, taxpayers have greater control over how their dollars are used. The amount donated will be credited directly against the amount of state taxes owed. A taxpayer cannot, however, receive a refund based on a donation amount.
Donations must be made by Wednesday, Dec. 31, in order to qualify for the tax deduction for the 2014 year. Once a donation is made, the school district will issue a receipt that allows the taxpayer to take the expected deduction.
Taxpayers can choose from approximately 56 different clubs, or give their funds to an “undesignated” group for distribution by school administrators. Clubs at Park Elementary School include Park Performers and Park Special Olympics, while those donating to Hulet Elementary School can choose between the Hulet Spelling Bee, band, choir and 3 C’s program.
Holbrook Junior High School offers many more choices, including a general athletics category, as well as softball, volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, track, wrestling, band, choir, Student Council, art and Special Olympics.
Holbrook High School offers up the same choices as HJHS, as well as Spiritline, baseball, chess, cross country, drama, soccer, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), football, golf, Key Club, National Honor Society, Fusion drumline, Swing Thing, Movin’, select choir, wrestlerettes, yearbook, Outdoor Club, robotics, autos, sports medicine, runners, science, Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and the Green Club.
All of the schools offer an “undesignated” option.
There are no special requirements for a taxpayer to receive the credit. For example, the taxpayer does not need to have a child attending the school in order to be eligible. In addition, parents who have paid fees for their children to participate in extracurricular activities can claim the credit in an amount equal to the fees paid.
To make a donation before the deadline, visit the district office at 1000 Eighth Ave., or call Dawn Turley at 524-2815.
