The undefeated Sun Valley Indian School varsity volleyball team recently challenged the undefeated Tonto Basin Wranglers in an epic battle for first place in the league. The Wranglers emerged victorious. Communication, or lack thereof, seemed to permeate the team, beginning with the first game of the match. Attacking errors also did not help, wherein the team lost the first game convincingly, 25-17. The second game saw the competition level rise, with both teams taking leads several times. While the miscommunication continued, the Warriors clawed their way to a 25-23 victory over their longtime rivals. The third game was not so kind to the visitors, as the Wranglers tightened their grip on the match and won handily, 15-4. Coach Kris Miller was pleased with most of the effort, but would like to see fewer mental errors. Knowing some of the varsity players, including a starter, were missing due to grades, he concluded that they gave a better than average effort. The junior varsity failed to claim a game, falling 0-2 to the Wranglers in the early match. The young Wranglers seemed to be out of steam, which tends to happen after a three-hour drive. They remain a work in progress, but with high potential for years to come. Coach Miller is excited to see their continual progress.
