The Sun Valley Indian School Warriors began the basketball season strong with a very convincing victory over last year’s champion, Mountain Christian School of Show Low. The Warriors started off with a 14-2 first quarter lead and never looked back, though the final score of 29-20 does not indicate the dominant performance. Led by Carlton Nez with 12 points and Levander Dewey with 10, the Warriors got a plethora of turnovers to ensure the victory. Shooting 42 shots to 19 shots for Mountain Christian, the Warriors pack-line defense flexed its muscles time after time. The junior varsity played well, but lost 26-18. The young Warriors competed for three quarters, even gaining an 18-17 lead, but their stamina would not maintain as they played with only six players. Eligle Begay, who scored 6 points, and the Warriors look to rebound this week. The Warriors were slated to host Vernon on Tuesday and Tonto Basin on Thursday, Feb. 12.
